3 Questions with Mame Diarra Niang, CUP’s high school intern

3 Questions with Mame Diarra Niang, CUP's high school intern

1. What was your favorite part of the internship?

My favorite part of the internship was when I went out and interviewed this famous journalist Ben Chapman at the NY Daily News and asked him about his job as a journalist and got his opinion about civic engagement, and the relationship between civic engagement and journalism.

2. You started out as a student in a City Studies classroom, and now you’re an intern at CUP! What will you take with you from your experiences at CUP?

As a student at International Community High School  I was able to interview the public with the help of CUP. I was able to interview people that I never thought I would meet! I was impressed that I had the opportunity to interview New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera and many more responsible people who are currently working for the U.S Government. [As an intern] I learned how to use Adobe illustrator, which gave me a real understanding about graphic design.

3. What issue do you think could benefit from a Making Policy Public poster?

An issue in my community that I think would benefit from an MPP is how to apply for financial aid regardless of your immigration status, because immigrants are NOT eligible for federal financial aid, but they are eligible for [other kinds of] financial aid. I think the MPP should include how you can be eligible for financial aid with or without permanent residence or being a US Citizen.
