What’s the federal eviction ban?

What's the federal eviction ban?

Last month the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention passed a nationwide moratorium on evictions. The new ban temporarily makes it illegal for landlords across the country to evict tenants for not paying rent. Landlords who try to evict tenants during the ban can be fined up to $500,000, but when the ban expires on January 1st, 2021, landlords can take their tenants to housing court to collect missed rent and start the eviction process.

As many advocates across the country are fighting for stronger tenant protections, we made a quick guide to the Federal Eviction Ban. It covers how the moratorium works, as well as what it does not do. Check it out here!

(In NYC, tenants have additional rights that protect them against eviction during the moratorium. Contact our partners Housing Court Answers to learn more!)
